Pumpkin pie, turkey, mashed potatoes, and gravy. It’s easy to think about food when asked about Thanksgiving. But for those who have never experienced a big family-style meal or celebrated Thanksgiving with their family in the typical sense, the holiday season can be a time of anxiety and seclusion.

FHU student puts a platter of food in the ovenFrancis Howell Union strives to help its students during this time by hosting one of the most heartwarming events in the Francis Howell School District: the FHU Thanksgiving Luncheon. FHU students and staff work side by side to prepare a luncheon fit for a king (or even a superintendent). A full Thanksgiving meal is provided, including turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie with lots of whipped cream. FHHS essential skills students help out each year by creating homemade table decorations and welcome signs for attendees.

“FHU Thanksgiving is special to our school family, as we are able to give thanks to all the people who serve us and influence our daily lives,” said Lisha Ewing, School Counselor. “Having an opportunity for all to partake in a meal together no matter their status, age, or position is what the FHU family is all about.”

The luncheon means more than a free meal; it’s something incredibly unique and holds a special place in many attendees’ hearts. Board of Education members sit next to students who sit next to maintenance personnel who sit next to administrators who sit next to parents. “I think it’s special because it creates an opportunity for people to get together and just realize that we aren’t all as different as we all think we are,” said senior Caitlen Keys.

FHU community fill their plates with food

Individuals from all walks of life at FHSD are pulled together as a reminder of what’s really important during the upcoming holiday season: family. Whether that’s the family we were born with or the family we found along the way.

Family is exactly what Francis Howell Union has created within its walls. A community of individuals accepted for who they are, what they are, and where they are in their life. “Since Union was established in 1998, we have always been known as a family environment,” said Ewing. “Kids have always felt comfortable here and able to be themselves no matter their background story that brought them to the U. Now they have not only this family-style experience but also the opportunity to meet and graciously thank all for caring for our family!”
