High school students from across the District recently attended the annual Construction Industry Trades Expo hosted by The Larry Elms Carpenters Training Center and sponsored by the Carpenters' Joint Apprenticeship Program. The goal of the expo is to provide high school juniors and seniors with an opportunity to learn more about the various trade industries and how they can pursue a career in construction.

Representatives from local apprenticeship programs were in attendance to speak with students and share what they do on a daily basis. FHC student William Carrington attended the event in hopes that he would learn more about a career as a plumber or electrician. “Some students don’t necessarily know what they want to do after high school, so this event shows them the various career choices that are out there,” said Carrington.

While the professionals answered students’ questions, they also shared the importance of training to prepare for the construction field. “Students are realizing today that they can get training and education, even an Associate’s degree, paid for while earning a very nice wage with benefits all while doing something they love,” shared FHSD College and Career Specialist Katie Vargas.

Many youth today believe that success in the workplace is found by attending a traditional college. However, apprenticeship programs can lead them to a great future while making money right out of high school. “I define success as being financially independent, fulfilled, and happy with what you are doing day-to-day at a full-time job,” shared Vargas.

Construction and trade workers are valuable in our society today. They keep our school buildings air conditioned during the warm weather and they build comfortable homes for families to make many memories. Whether a student decides on a career in wood-working or wiring, they are making a difference in our communities and our world.
